Tech giant Google to promote fewer employees to senior roles

Tech giant Google has informed its employees via an email that fewer of them will be promoted to more senior levels this year as compared to the past.

“The process is manager-led and will be largely similar to last year — though with our slower pace of hiring, we are planning for fewer promotions into L6 and above than when Google was growing quickly,” the tech giant said in an email that was viewed by CNBC.

The L6 distinction refers to the first layer of the workforce which is considered senior and normally consists of people with roughly ten years of experience.

The tech giant said it will be promoting fewer people to senior roles “to ensure that the number of Googlers in more senior and leadership roles grows in proportion to the growth of the company.”

“If your manager believes that you are ready to be promoted, they will nominate you,” it added.

The company said in the email that employees in technical roles who wish to “self-nominate” themselves will have a “short window of time” between March 6 to March 8 to do

chip shortage: Dutch government to restrict sales of

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The Dutch government announced Wednesday that it is planning on imposing additional restrictions on the export of machines that make advanced processor chips, joining a U.S. push that aims at limiting China’s access to materials used to make such chips.

Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Liesje Schreinemacher sent a letter to lawmakers outlining the proposed limitations, which come in addition to existing export controls on semiconductor technology.

“In view of technological developments and geopolitical context, the government has come to the conclusion that it is necessary for (inter)national security to extend the existing export control of specific semiconductor production equipment,” she wrote.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited U.S. President Joe Biden in January for talks on advanced chip machines made by Dutch company ASML and other topics.

The Biden administration in October imposed export controls to limit China’s access to advanced chips, which it says can be used to make weapons, commit human rights abuses and improve the speed and accuracy of its military logistics. It urged allies like Japan and the Netherlands to follow suit.

China has criticized the moves as violations of market principles in international trade.

Musk engages in heated exchange with ex-Twitter employee;

Elon Musk, chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter, and Haraldur Thorleifsson, a former employee, have been engaged in a war of words on the microblogging platform. It started when Thorleifsson shared a post on Twitter seeking clarity on whether the company had fired him.

Soon, Musk replied with mocking replies and talked about the former employee’s disability on the platform openly. Musk has, however, now apologised for his behaviour.

It started with Thorleifsson’s tweet, which said, “9 days ago, the access to my work computer was cut, along with about 200 other Twitter employees. However, your head of HR is not able to confirm if I am an employee or now. You have not answered my emails. Maybe if enough people retweet, you’ll answer me here?”

To this, Musk replied, “What work have you been doing?”. Thorleifsson then listed his job profile, but Musk continued posing questions to the replies. When another user, Alex Cohen, shared the thread on his Twitter handle, Musk wrote, “The reality is that this guy (who is independently wealthy) did no actual work, claimed as his excuse that he had a disability that
