Ganesh Chaturthi marks the anniversary of Lord Ganesha who is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Also known as elephant god, Lord Ganesha is the god of wealth, sciences, knowledge, wisdom and prosperity. All the new beginnings starts with the worship of Lord Ganesha as he is known as a remover of obstacles.
Gajanana, Dhoomraketu, Ekdanta, Vakratunda and Siddhi Vinayaka are some of his other names.

Significance
The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi starts on Shukla Paksha Chaturthi as per the Hindu calendar in the month of Bhadrapada and ends on Chaturdashi.

Rituals
After the celebrations Ganesh idols are submerged in water as part of the ‘Visarjan’. The festival marks the descent of Lord Ganesh with his mother the goddess Parvarti/Gauri from ‘Kailash Parvat’.
Small idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in homes and prayers, aartis and hymns are performed and prasads are distributed.
